London General

London General Fire Marshal Training

London General Transport was formerly the state owned operating arm of London Transport. It is now part of the Go-Ahead group and operates over 600 buses from 5 main depots.

The company’s safety policy dictates that all staff receive regular fire safety training. In 2001 the Fire Marshal system was consolidated and it was decided that formal third party training would be provided to selected managers. Due to a longstanding relationship with UK Fire Training we were contracted to deliver the programme.

At the planning stage, LGT were consulted about the scope, content and aims of the training. This meant customizing the courses to take account of their unique operating environment. Fire Marshals were to hold responsibility for buildings including offices, workshops and depots containing fleets of vehicles worth millions of pounds.

The risk profile of LGT was also unique. They operate a 24 hour 365 day a year operation relied upon by countless passengers. The fleet contains many combustible materials and the storage of fuel, oil and other high risk product is a key issue. Added to this, the safe management of contractors carrying out welding and other potentially hazardous processes needed to be considered within the training.

The initial programme for over 100 key staff needed to be carried out over a short and intense training period. As Fire Marshals, delegates would assume responsibility for duties including fire hazard.

Since 2001, an ongoing programme of training new Fire Marshals and retraining staff whose 3 year certificates had lapsed has been provided. Over this time the content has been developed to reflect the changing risk profile of LGT and changes in best practice in the fire safety world. We have worked at all of the LGT offices, workshops and bus depots. Over 500 staff have been trained. Reviews have been consistently high. We appointed Richard cavalier as lead trainer and he has developed a close working relationship with LGT staff. This has led to confidence amongst delegates as Richard has effectively become part of the team.

The experience of this contract has allowed us to transfer our knowledge to clients in similar fields. We has delivered training for National express and other similar organizations.
