Fire Training Courses for Baxters

The Baxters Food Group have been producing some of the UK's finest soups, preserves, condiments, chutneys and other high quality foods since 1868. Baxters are based in the town of Fochabers which is situated in Scotland between Aberdeen and Inverness.

To meet their legal obligations under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, the company decided to carry out a large scale fire training programme to cover staff at many levels. The programme was to be fully supported by senior management and built around the company’s unique needs.

The Head Office site consists of a 90.000 sq. ft. and a 60,000 sq. ft. production plant, an office complex and the famous "Baxters Highland Village". Baxters Highland village welcomes over 220,000 visitors each year incorporating four retail units and a visitor center.

"Both the Fire Marshal & Fire Safety awareness training was a great achievement. Overall feedback from the employees was positive, even raising personal awareness for their homes. The standard of the customer servicers from the UK Fire Training team has been excellent, providing both flexibility and attention to detail to ensure the training ran effortlessly."

Margaret McKay. Operational Administration Manager

Baxters

The challenge for UK Fire Training was to develop a training programme designed to cater for:

  • Each of the Baxters site operations (production/retail/office).
  • Staff with different fire safety responsibilities.
  • Findings of the Fire Risk Assessment and local enforcement authorities.
  • Varying shift patterns and hours of opening.

In addition, Baxters wanted to fit the training around their production peaks and closedown phases.

The UK Fire Training solution was to offer a dedicated ex-Fire Service trainer to develop and deliver all of the training. This lead to clear communication, consistency of style of delivery and content and a real understanding of and commitment to the client. The development phase included site visits and meetings with relevant members of the Baxters safety management team. Two courses were developed from this and a programme was arranged to cover all parts of the site.

The first phase of training incorporated sessions for around 100 staff with the role of Fire Marshal. This IFE approved half day course incorporated hands-on training in the use of fire extinguishers. The second phase provided basic fire safety awareness to the general workforce. Most sessions ran during the day but others were arranged to run early in the morning and late at night. This fitted in with shift patterns and retail opening hours.

Extinguisher training included using the purpose built “gas simulator unit”. This is designed to allow safe and realistic practical sessions. The equipment is environmentally safe and the trainer carried out a full risk assessment prior to use. This involved the Baxter Health and safety team.

Prior to the practical, our trainer completed a clear demonstration of the extinguishers. Individual delegates were then invited to participate in the use of a selection of extinguishers and also a fire blanket. Our trainer brought all of the equipment and extinguishers for this exercise.

The programme was a great success with over 700 delegates receiving vital training during 2012.
